代表作『はらぺこあおむし』（もりひさし　訳）で知られるエリック・カールさんが、5月23日（日）にお亡くなりになりました。91歳でした。

『はらぺこあおむし』は今年、日本語版の刊行から45周年をむかえました。穴あきのしかけを凝らした斬新な絵本は、その豊かな色彩や、おいしそうな食べ物、希望に満ちたストーリーで子どもたちに親しまれ、累計430万部を発行しています。

偕成社ではエリック・カールさんの作品を70点以上翻訳刊行しており、エリック・カールさんをはじめとするご家族の方々とも、長年親しくさせていただきました。

2017年に来日された際は、会社にお招きし、社員総出でささやかなランチパーティーを開催いたしました。「和」のおもてなしを……ということで、社員が書道を披露すると、「ぼくもやりたい！」とたちあがり、あっという間に素敵なあおむしを描きあげてくれたことが、とても印象にのこっています。創作意欲に満ち満ちたアーティストの姿が垣間見られた瞬間でした。

We are very sad to tell, that Eric Carle, the world-famous picture book author, known of his masterpiece “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”  has passed away on May 23, 2021. He was 91 years old.

Kaisei-sha as the publisher of his books in Japan, has been publishing  over 70 titles. Our edition of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” was first published in 1976, and this year,  we are celebrating 45th anniversary. We are pleased to tell that this unique, colorful book has been the best seller of all times.

One of the memorable times with Eric is when he arrived to Japan in 2017. During the welcome lunch party at our office,  when one of our members showed his calligraphy as Japanese traditional culture, Eric suddenly stood up and said “Let me try!”.  After a very short-practice, he quickly painted a nice caterpillar by calligraphy!  At that time we realized that he was a born-artist!

Dear Eric, thank you very much  for your fabulous picture books and warm friendship with us. Please rest in peace.
